20 New and Significant Threads Statistics for 2023

The Glorious Company Team

Threads is Meta’s new social media app, meant to be the so-called “Twitter killer.” Built by the Instagram team, Threads immediately got off to a super-strong start, surging to more than 100 million new users in less than 5 days after its launch on July 5, 2023. These were truly impressive Threads statistics.

Since then, things have quickly taken a sharp downturn for the app.

By July 21—just 16 days after its peak—Threads shed 70% of its daily active users. The average amount of time that users spend inside Threads on both iPhone and Android also dropped, plunging from 19 minutes to just 4 minutes.

So what happened to reverse the fortunes of Meta’s new microblogging app this quickly? While Elon Musk is likely happy, Mark Zuckerberg can’t be too thrilled (though Meta executives say the decline isn’t a problem).

We take a hard look at all available Threads stats to figure out the true story of the app’s user base, demographics, and usage stats.

Threads Statistics

Here’s a roundup of all the data surrounding Threads’ meteoric rise and stall, including users, usage, demographics, revenue projections, and trends.

Number of Threads Users: The Rise of Threads

1. Threads hit 2 million users in the first two hours of release.

Mark Zuckerberg took to his new app to announce this early milestone on July 5.

2. Threads reached 5 million users in the first four hours of release.

Threads was released into 120 different countries, helping the new app reach this aggressive user adoption in such a short period of time.

3. Threads reached 10 million users in the first seven hours of release.

The feature that enabled Threads to increase it user base so quickly was that new users could log in straightaway with their Instagram credentials, making the transition smooth.

4. Threads saw 30 million users within 18 hours of release.

By the time of this milestone, Threads was the number one free app on Apple’s app store in the US and the UK.

5. Threads amassed 70 million users in less than two days.

Celebrities and influencers with big name recognition, signing up to the platform, further increased user adoption in such a short time.

6. Threads surged to 100 million users within just five days of its launch.

What was remarkable about this milestone was the speed with which it happened. Another widely hyped technology, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, reached this number of users in only two weeks after its release. According to Zuckerberg, this surge was mostly because of organic demand. This beeline to 100 million users proved would soon stall out, however.

7. Threads is estimated to have 119 million overall users who have signed up to the platform, but are not active daily users.

This estimate comes from Quiver Quantitative, an investment data platform, which uses an approximation calculation based upon the sampling of follower counts.

The Number of Threads Users exploded at the start of the app's launch, but has since stalled.

Number of Threads Users: The Fall of Threads

8. The average amount of time spent by US users inside Threads fell from 20 minutes on July 6 to around 8 minutes by July 10.

Analysts indicate that the early interest in Threads didn’t translate to users regularly visiting the app thereafter or compared to other social media apps.

9. Daily active users dropped by more than 25% on Android phones across the world between July 7 and July 10.

Data for iOS still needed to be gathered at this point and wasn’t available, as Threads was still in the process of calibrating its iOS data with its model.

10. Threads’ number of daily active users (DAUs) dropped by 20% from July 8 to July 11 and 12, according to market intelligence company Sensor Tower.

The reality is that, in spite of the aggressive start, Threads faces an uphill climb in convincing users that they should make it part of their daily social media routine.

11. By July 11 and 12, the time that a user spent in Threads was down to 10 minutes from 20 minutes, just days earlier.

Analysts say that Threads is bogged down by its value proposition—Twitter without Elon Musk. However, that’s proving to be insufficient to further drive user adoption.

12. Threads’ daily active users dropped by almost half—from 49 million to just 23.6 million—by July 14.

This decline means that Threads now only had 22% of Twitter’s entire audience, a far cry from its supposed pedigree as a “Twitter killer.” Further, usage among US users fell to just 6 minutes per day, after reaching a peak early on July 7.

13. Threads only has 13 million daily active users as of July 21, a drop of 70% of its daily active user base of 44 million on July 7.

According to Sensor Tower, Threads rival Twitter has an active daily user base of 200 million.

14. The average daily time users spend on Threads is now just 4 minutes by July 21.

This is a monumental drop of 79% from its launch-day peak of 19 minutes of daily time.

15. Threads has lost more than 50% of its users as of July 27.

The loss of more than half of its user base was confirmed by Zuckerberg in an internal Meta town hall.

17. There had already been more than 95 million user posts on Threads within 24 hours of the app’s July 5 launch.

This milestone was reached by early Thursday morning on July 6.

18. Threads users shared more than 190 million likes on the platform in less than one day of the app’s July 5 launch.

This was another milestone that Threads reached on Thursday morning, the morning after its launch.

Threads Stats: Threads Revenue

Threads has not earned any revenue as of the time of this writing. What follows are revenue projections by analysts of how much revenue Threads could earn in the years to come.

19. Threads could make between $2 and $3 billion every year for parent company Meta between 2024 and 2027.

This represents an estimate by Morningstar analysts released on July 11.

20. Threads is on track to make up to $8 billion in annual revenue by 2025.

This is an estimate from July 9 by Evercore ISI, an analytics firm. The $8 billion would represent a small chunk of Meta’s overall $156 billion in revenue projected in 2025.

Threads Projected Revenue Estimates for 2024-2027

Threads is projected to earn up to $5 billion USD by 2025, but that largely depends on the app's ability to actually retain its users.

Threads is a hot property in social media right now, in spite of its uneven growth and struggles with retaining its daily active user base. Time will tell whether it indeed turns into the much-hyped “Twitter killer” or simply becomes another app in the social media landscape.
